Art therapy workshops at the Bloomsbury Festival

Picture
Art Therapy4all ran 2 workshops exploring the idea of 'Journeys' at the Bloomsbury Festival in October.
The workshops took place in the UCL Art Museum alongside artworks from the Headway Brain injury association, showcasing works by 4 artists.
The images on display told the story of the impact a stoke has on an individual, and the artists explored their journeys through suffering a stroke, disability, rehabilitation and recovery.

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded Lottery Funding for 5 projects in care homes working with the elderly.

The role of art therapy with the elderly:
Art Therapy for older adults in a care home can be used for a variety of reasons including:

- Exploring creativity
- Providing an alternative way of communicating
- Communicating issues that may be difficult or confusing
- Expressing feelings of anxiety or depression
- Exploring issues such as grief or loss
- Recalling important life events and memories
- Considering changes in personal circumstances
- Aiding relaxation
- Reduction in isolation and loneliness
- Socialising
Art making has the capacity to aid relaxation, decrease stress and help to ease depression, fear and pain. Art Therapy is a way of helping to adjust, stimulate and preserve mental capacity along with improving dexterity and therefore achieving a better quality of life.

Art Therapists will use the appropriate approach and methods when considering how experiences have shaped an individual and facilitate growth and change.

As people age their lives change considerably. Their independence is fading away and dependency on others is essential. Art Therapy can help with the challenges that aging brings by helping to develop better coping strategies.

The Art Therapist will work alongside carers and other professionals in becoming an integral part of the older adults care plan.

Art Therapy is a way of helping to adjust, stimulate and preserve mental capacity along with improving dexterity and therefore achieving a better quality of life.
